The scholarships are part of Rumpke’s commitment to education and are offered to graduating high school seniors in designated communities in the company’s service areas, which now includes Estill County. Students pursuing a two-year or four-year degree from an accredited institution, including vocational/trade schools, are eligible.
“As a family-owned and -operated business, we believe in investing in the next generation,” said Region Vice President Adam Rumpke. “To help support education and development, we offer annual scholarships to graduating high school seniors throughout our service areas.”
In 2025, Rumpke awarded $82,500 in scholarships. Winners are chosen based on their commitment to academics, leadership ability, environmental stewardship and desire to serve the community.
Rumpke also provides free facility and landfill tours and on-site presentations to educate students and community members of all ages about proper waste disposal and recycling.

Estill County High School JAG students recently spent the day in Frankfort at the Kentucky State Capitol for JAG Day, where they gained a firsthand look at how state government operates.
During the visit, students had the opportunity to meet with our local state representative, Bill Wesley, and learned about the legislative process. A highlight was assisting him in hanging a framed copy of the most recent bill that he proposed and passed, a hands-on experience showing the real impact of legislation.
JAG is an amazing program for our students, and we are fortunate to offer it to the youth of Estill County. It provides them with valuable opportunities to learn, lead, and grow. A huge thank you goes to Mrs. Ashley Flynn for being an incredible JAG instructor and for guiding our students through these experiences!

Experiences like this help students see how the skills they are learning in the classroom connect directly to real-world careers. Estill and Powell County students are fortunate to have access to opportunities that allow them to explore their future and learn from industry professionals.
A special thank you to their instructor, Mr. Bargo, for his dedication and hard work supporting his students. We also appreciate our amazing community partners, TMMK and BCTC, for taking the time to welcome our students, answer their questions, and inspire the next generation of skilled workers. 🔧🏭👏

They experienced the Commonwealth tour of the Louisville Orchestra, entitled "In Harmony" at the Norton Center for the Arts, featuring pieces by Beethoven, Shostakovich, Tchaikovsky, and more! The following day, they spent the morning at the Art Center of the Bluegrass creating mosaic designs shaped like the state of Kentucky! These hands-on artistic experiences, organized by KEDC, continue to energize the arts for educators throughout the state!

Creativity and community came together to create a special learning opportunity for an Estill County High School senior. 🎨✂️
ECHS senior Michael Baird is currently working on a "Villain Era" costume for a fashion design project in the Technology Student Association (TSA) State Competition. While learning the basics of sewing with Community Education Director Melinda Barnett (Mrs. M), it quickly became clear that Michael had developed a real passion for the project and wanted to learn more.
To help him continue building his skills, Mrs. M recruited a volunteer, her mother-in-law, Belinda Barnett, a talented seamstress who also works with 5th-grade students at Clay City Elementary, teaching them to sew dresses for the Little Dresses for Africa project.
Belinda spent the day helping Michael create a messenger bag, generously donating the pattern, fabric, thread, straps, and even gifting him his own sewing kit!
Thank you to the Estill County Public Library for providing a space to create, and to Belinda Barnett for volunteering her time to help a student develop a new skill. Congratulations to Michael for stepping outside his comfort zone and doing an outstanding job.
Today was a great day of learning!

At South Irvine, Ms. Krissy Muncie’s class celebrated by dancing the day away in their 100 Days of School t-shirts.
We are proud of the hard work that all of our students across the district have put in over the past 100 days and look forward to seeing what they will accomplish in the days ahead. 🎉📚

They discovered that you don’t need a box of pancake mix to make great pancakes… but apparently, you do need to make a little bit of a mess along the way!
Great job to the students for learning a new skill and starting the day with a delicious breakfast.
