Child Abuse

Child abuse comes in many forms: physical, sexual and emotional.  It seems that every day we hear about another case of child abuse or child exploitation in our society.  Recent events in our own community tells us that it can happen in any place at any time.

Red Book Training

There will be Redbook Training for coaches on Wednesday, September 5 at 5pm.

At 7pm, there will be Booster Training.

Please encourage all the coaches and booster officers to attend. We know not everyone can’t attend, but it is important at least a couple of people from each booster organization attend. There will be a lot information.

Plan on the training taking place at the central office training room.

Soccer Statement

The entire Estill County School Community is saddened by the recent events surrounding our Engineer Soccer Program.  Within minutes of school officials receiving allegations of inappropriate actions by Coach Andrew Hatton, local law enforcement was notified.  Since that time we have worked hand in hand with the Kentucky State Police in order to complete a thorough investigation into this matter.

Estill Springs Open House

We want to welcome all students and parents to Estill Springs tomorrow afternoon for Open House.  When you arrive, it will be evident that there is still construction going on at the school, but the areas of the building that will be occupied by the students have been inspected by state officials and cleared for occupancy.

The Start of School

I have just met with the contractor this morning and we believe that it is best to move the first day of school for students to August 13th. The Safety of our students has to be priority one, and we want to make sure the building is 100% safe.

NISL NISL Graduates

Congratulations to Tonya Isaacs and Andrea Williams for completing NISL Training (National Institute for School Leadership).  This training is very intensive and positions our leadership to better serve our students and staff.

Operation Bobcat Operation Bobcat Flyer

The U.S. Department of Defense and the U.S. Military’s reserve forces, in partnership with the Kentucky Department for Local Government and the Kentucky Air National Guard, present Operation Bobcat Medical IRT. These clinics will provide medical screenings, dental exams and optical exams at no cost to the patient.

New graduation requirements survey

Wax Museum Wax Museum

5th graders hosted a wax museum today at West Irvine.  They researched a person from history or pop culture, wrote and performed a monologue.

STLP State Middle School Champions STLP Champions

Congratulations to the Estill County Middle School Robotics team for winning the STLP state championship in robotics. Over 40 teams participated in the competition held at Rupp Arena. ECMS went undefeated in the tournament. Edward Swanson and David Bullock represented ECMS.  In the 8 years ECMS and ECHS have been competing in robotics, we have won 4 state championships, 3 runners up, and one 3rd place. We have also won numerous regional competitions. The robotics team has 18 middle school and 10 high school members. They are coached by Brian McKinney, Allyson Banks and Adora Williams

Revised Calendar

The Estill County Board of Education wants everyone to be aware that the Board voted to take the last two (2) days of Spring Break at last night's board meeting.

So all of Spring Break is now cancelled and as of today, the last day for students will be 05/25, with a STAFF DAY (TE) 05/29 and Closing Day 05/30.

Early Dismissal Monday

Estill County Schools will dismiss at 2:00 PM Monday, March 5. The need to dismiss early is due to our high school basketball team participating in the regional tournament in Hazard, Ky. The start time of the game along with our school bus driver shortage is requiring this early release. Please plan accordingly, as our schools will begin dismissing students one hour earlier than our normal time.

School Threat

This afternoon at approximately 6pm, I received a report of a student on a school bus with a weapon.  Our School Resource Officer, along with Irvine PD, went to the students’ house to conduct an investigation.  In the course of the investigation, a BB gun was located and the student has been arrested and charged with Terroristic Threatening, a class D Felony.

Bus Drivers Needed

The Estill County Board of Education’s Transportation Department is hiring school bus drivers. Full time positions are available as well as part-time substitutes. These positions have a beginning hourly rate of $14.65. Full time employees are able to obtain health insurance. Applicants must pass a criminal background check, drug test, and have a high school diploma or GED equivalent. Contact Tim Burkhart at 606-723-2482.

Public Forum on School Safety

The Estill County Board of Education will have a special called meeting on Monday, March 1, at 6pm.  The Public Forum will be held at the Estill County High School Auditorium and the topic of discussion will be school safety.  If you have any questions, feel free to contact Mr. Saylor at any time.

The Estill County School System would like to thank the Irvine PD, Ravenna PD and The Kentucky State Police for agreeing to provide an increased law enforcement presence at each of our school sites.  If you see a police cruiser of extra officers on site, do not be alarmed.  If you have any questions or concerns, feel free to call Mr. Saylor at any time. 

2018-2019 School Calendar Survey - Round 2

The Estill County Board of Education is seeking input concerning next years' school calendar. The board will adopt next years' calendar at the March 15th, special called board meeting.

The link for the calendar survey is below. The survey will end on March 9th. This is the second round of the survey consisting of the three calendars that were discuss at the February 22nd board meeting.

Health Sciences Position

Estill County High School is in dire need of a Health Science Teacher.  The position has been re-posted until March 3, 2018.  

Threat

Dear Parents, Students and Guardians,

A threat was made today outside of school through social media toward an individual student at Estill County High School.  As soon as the administration learned of the incident, they immediately acted upon the information received.  The school resource officer and principal have thoroughly investigated the threat and the situation has been resolved. The student who was threatened and his/her parents have been notified.

This weekend there were many concerns posted on social media regarding a threat made at the high school.  First, I can say with full confidence that there was no reported threat made toward any student, staff member or school during last week.

After the tragedy at Marshall County High School and now the most recent incident in Florida, I wanted to reach out to our students, parents, staff and community to let you know what precautions we have taken during the past few weeks.

Schools Closed

Over the past few days’ we have been in contact with many of the health care providers in Estill County.  As everyone is well aware, there have been several confirmed cases of the flu and we have seen a significant increase in the number of students and staff members that have become ill.  With this in mind, we feel it is necessary for us to cancel school for the remainder of the week.

In wake of yesterday’s tragedy in Marshall County, I wanted to reach out to our school community to let you know that we take school safety very seriously. Every time we hear the words “School Shooting”, it sends a shock wave of emotions through each of us.  The purpose of this message today is to provide a word of comfort and give you a few resources you may be able to use at home, if you decide to have a discussion with your child or if they have questions about what happened (See attachments).
