Mental Health Spotlight

Infections disease epidemics, such as the Cornavirus (Covid 19), can be frightening not only for adults but also for children.  Many of our children and adolescents are very aware of the dangers of Covid 19 due to news reports, social media, and word-of-mouth discussions.  It is important to ensure that we are taking care of our own mental health needs and those of our children/youth during this time.  Children and adolescents are typically very aware of heightened emotions around them and may internalize some of these fears.

Some symptoms of increased anxiety to be aware of can include:

  • Feeling nervous, restless or tense
  • Having a sense of impending danger, panic or doom
  • Feeling weak or tired
  • Trouble concentrating or thinking about anything other than the present worry
  • Having trouble sleeping
  • Experiencing gastrointestinal (GI) problems
  • Having difficulty controlling worry
  • Trouble separating from caregiver
  • Having the urge to avoid things that trigger anxiety
  • Having an increased heart rate
  • Breathing rapidly (hyperventilation)
  • Sweating/Trembling
