Make Sure Your Donations Count

October 1, 2018

Estill County is a caring community full of charitable people. It is no surprise that our school district gets approached regularly by individuals who want to raise funds to help the less fortunate in our community, especially our children. We applaud these individuals for their heartfelt charity and willingness to help those in need.  In today's world, a system of checks and balances must be in place to protect all involved parties; children and families who receive assistance, volunteers who raise funds, donors to the cause, community organizations, and the Estill County School District.   Everyone must be protected from any possible wrongdoing by those who would misrepresent themselves for personal gain.

The Estill County School district has adopted its own process to ensure everyone in the community is protected and the ones who need assistance are the ones who receive it. Our Family Resource and Youth Service Center Directors are coordinators for student assistance programs for our community's young people. Also, there are multiple organizations who provide Christmas assistance for children in need, and our Centers’ Directors match up the organizations with the children who need their assistance.

Also, Estill County Schools only partners with organizations and civic groups who have been designated as 501(c)(3) charities by the Internal Revenue Service or are government agencies. By adhering to this practice we ensure accountability across the spectrum of this process. Only donations made to registered nonprofits are tax deductible by the donor.

We ask our community partners to reach out to the Estill County Schools Central Office if you are approached by any individuals or organizations who are raising funds on behalf of Estill County's students.  Be especially cautious of any individuals or groups using internet fundraising such as “Go Fund Me”.  Teresa Dawes, our Community Education Director, is our point of contact to answer any questions from our community about the validity of fundraising endeavors.

If you are interested in getting involved with helping Estill County's students, there are multiple organizations, agencies, and opportunities across our community and within our district. The Family Resource and Youth Service Center Directors are outstanding resources to help you find an existing group doing great things for our youth.

Finally, if you have any further questions or wish to check on someone soliciting funds for our school district, please feel free to contact me or Teresa here at Central Office.  We want to make sure that your generosity and is making a difference for our students and families.

Sincerely,

Jeff Saylor

Superintendent

Estill County School District
